Extra PAR files - you *DONT* need these , unless you've downloaded the files above and its telling you that your missing blocks (and really only if its a small number of blocks)

7 meg : https://www.dropbox.com/s/ynw350t99tc04 ... %2B20.PAR2
14 meg : https://www.dropbox.com/s/qr8rbmiknkyus ... %2B38.PAR2
28 meg : https://www.dropbox.com/s/do1ux967bh0pb ... %2B75.PAR2
Rev Owen memorial quiz is tomorrow night. :)

** edit ** - okay that wont work since 001 / 002 etc files have an 'extension not allowed' message which means i need to rename them to something else or wait till Grim... is back from the Cottage.

I'm sure Grim will give you direct upload access but in the meantime and generally can't you just stick it Dropbox?

Yes I can and i've created a dropbox for it - its uploading now (slowly)
Okay do we have a volunteer

The top post on this page has all the links (14 files + the Par2) - download them all , along with quickpar (http://www.quickpar.org.uk/) - open the par file and hit the magic button , it should combine everything to a single zip
Thank you downloading now.
Sorry not sure if I am doing something wrong but part 8 is coming up with 0 blocks & part 4 only 40 blocks instead of 117?

Check the file sizes of each (they should be the same ~50 meg) , however if your some blocks short I can upload another few files to fill those in (which is the advantage of doing it with parity files).

The disadvantage is that i cant do anything with them until i get home tonight.

Thanks really odd I have re-downloaded both & the file sizes are correct but on Quickpar they are showing less blocks?
What does the PAR process actually do for you here, over just making a multi-part ZIP or RAR file?

It creates some redundant files that can be used to restore partial or missing parts (*)

So from the screenshot - there are 194 blocks needed to finish the archive , I can re-upload the parts which are wrong or corrupted but they might get corrupted or damaged again , or I can upload 194 blocks worth of 'par files' , and they can be used to make up the missing bits.

I'd say if you've tried again then its gone wrong during the upload - given that part 8 shows as 'zero blocks' - i'll definetly re-upload that one plus something for the other 80 odd blocks - i'll post on here when they are up (later tonight)

I've tried a few times over the years to read up on the PAR stuff but can never quite get my head around it. This scenario isn't making it much clearer to be honest; if you've got data that's uploaded badly why would you ever do anything apart from just reupload it? Any other solution just seems weird and complex and means more 'copies' of the same data floating around (i.e. the original corrupt file chunk which is still there plus whatever new PAR files you upload to fix the corruption). I can only assume I'm missing something fundamental with this stuff because it just seems like an insane way to solve the problem which usually means I've totally misunderstood it.

Okay - i'll try to give a very brief summary here but if you dont get it PM me and we'll not clutter up the thread on it - oh and the reason I know about this is because in the bad old days this was an excellent tool for pirates on newsgroups because there would often be missing files.

I have 600 mb of stuff i want to upload - if i upload that as a single 600mb file the chances of something in there getting corrupted either up or down is high and its an 'all or nothing' type of deal so if its wrong its 600mb every time.

Splitting the files down into smaller chunks (of 50mb) means that if one is corrupted then its just a smaller upload / download for everyone to grab the 'missing' file and its easier both for the uploader or the downloader - that should all be pretty straightforward ?

The 'magic' behind the par files comes when there is a part missing either of a full file or one of the files has a partial corruption on there.

The par files are seen by the system as 'blocks' and it knows it needs (lets keep the numbers simple) 600 blocks to recreate the whole file - when you split out the file you'll get a number of par files with different blocks (say 5 / 10 / 20 / 50) , each one is slightly bigger than the size of just '5' blocks (so in this example if they are 1 meg each the 5 block file is probably more like 7 and the 10 meg will be more like 12) but they can be used to replace *any* missing blocks in the whole file.

So you download the stuff and part 5 is missing , just totally gone , it was 50 blocks so you can download the 50 block 'par' file and it can then recreate that whole file - or you can download 2x20 block par files and a 10 , just as long as you get 50 blocks worth).

*or* you download the files and one of the files is partially corrupted - say file 3 should be 50 blocks but it only shows up as 40 , you can download any par file which contains more than 10 blocks and it will be used to replace the data - so instead of re-downloading another 50 meg you just re-download 12 or so.

Originally I wanted Pars so that i could split the file easily and have a checksum , but if there are 'bad' parts then I can use them to fix things (however in the example here I'll re-upload the totally 'broken' file and probably the partially broken one but Gospvg will just need to download the missing one plus a smaller par file) - oh and yes its probably over complicated for whats happening here but if i just split the files then uploaded them the first report today would have been 'file 4 is broken' and i'd have had to ask someone to re-download it , then i'd have re-uploaded it and assuming it worked then the next message would be 'file 12 is broken' and we'd have gone through the same again
That makes things a bit clearer at least in terms of how they're used, so thanks for that. The 'magic' part behind them is probably the bit I need to try and understand now because on the surface of it it does seem like impossible magic! I'll read up on that now though and no clutter the thread any further.
They basically perform the same function as a stripe volume in a RAID array, if that helps.
Right part 8 and part 4 have been re-uploaded and i've uploaded 3 parity files to the 2nd post - they hopefully wont be needed but if there is still a problem they should be able to replace at least one missing main file
Thanks re-downloaded parts 4 & 8 & all extracts fine.
Par sounds a bit useless then.

If I could get this, it would save me having to set Wordpress back up from the backup I have of the raw domain files, which would be a time saver. I don't want to leave The Rev's old version of Wordpress running on the open internet because it'll get hacked again, but I also don't want to upgrade it because of risk of data loss (it's really old). But I cannot make these multipart zips extract under OS X in any of the half dozen programmes I tried. Can I get a version in a less lame format, like a single zip file in Dropbox? Dropbox already has strong file checking, layering file splitting and PARs on top doesn't add any value.

I've also queued the domain for transfer out to my 123-reg account, as well as paying its renewal, so I repoint it to any web server I want. And I'm going to let the UKHost4u hosting expire then. I can host zaphod's backup on my own AWS server or we can put it on the Beex server, Grim.... Up to you.

Looking through the backup I have of his files, I just found some pics of me that Owen took at an Internet meet in 2000 or so. Very strange feeling. I still miss him.
If Grim...'s post doesnt work let me know and i'll try an alternative - i'm also on OSX but ended up creating and uploading the files via bootcamp.

As for files - try http://gp.home.xs4all.nl/Site/MacPAR_deLuxe.html which should be a mac program to handle the PAR's

The main files are just a backup of the whole website taken at the time
Here we are:

That stupid URL is only temporary - http://www.inverty.com will come back online in a week or so.
Grim... -- I've pointed the A-record for inverty.com to 217.160.92.15. I assume that's right...?
Well, it's working, so let's assume it is :)
Four years ago today :(
Just popped in to pay my respects to the big man, still miss him.
Keep on gaming in heaven Owen.
Gone but not forgotten.
How is Mrs Owen getting on, does anyone know?

I was just coming in here to post the exact same question.
Rev Owen will live forever.

Kevin Smith is in the next Batman Lego game for instance - it's like there's always something constantly reminding me of the Rev and his all round awesomeness.

Stuff like the above makes me sad that he has missed it but then it makes me happy that he enjoyed so much in the time he was here.

Just went to log in to Twitter on my work computer to see if I'm still following her.

Then remembered where I work and thought better of it.

Maybe someone else could have a quick look?
Mimi will be able to tell you more I'm sure.

I know she moved back to America pretty quickly to be with her family, and I think she got a teaching assistant job for a short time, but not sure what she's doing now.
Shes on my Facebook, she doesn't write about personal stuff that often that I see but she seems to be OK. She's obviously still deeply sad about it, as are we all. I passed on Beex's regards and said we were thinking of her.

Yeah, it's why you're no longer allowed to have an iPhone and I can't buy shitty Dell PCs.

No, it was a little joke.

That said, our office is getting too small for us, but the floor above is vacant and would be perfect. Sadly, it's owned by Twitter. And they've made it clear that even if M.Z. handed his bank card and PIN to them in exchange for it, they'd still sooner see it go empty.

(Or, as is the reality, sub-let it to another firm for *way* less than FB were offering.)
Get in there and vandalise it.

Good stuff, Doc. Hope she's okay.

Break in and spray paint graffiti insults all over the walls. And make sure they're longer than 140 characters, just to pour salt into their wounds.
hope she's ok.. sometimes you still find an owen reference somewhere.. on the xbox, here...
Was thinking about Owen so found this thread again. You may be gone but you'll never be forgotten.
It's been five years since Owen passed away every time I play a batman game or watch a scifi movie I think he would have enjoyed that.

He loved mobile gaming so I'll be playing doodle jump today & trying to beat his high score.

I have the Rev Owen Memorial Hat - the Cottage Quiz winners will take this home and I'm sure we'll raise a glass to him again this year.
Rest in Peace, buddy.
